WHAT SHOULD YOU VISIT IN DUINO?

TWO CASTLES

Actually you can find two castles in the village of Duino. Both built at the seaside on top of a rock, overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Here though the similarity ends.  The "youngest" dates back to the 15th century, while his older brother, was built about 800 years earlier!

THE LEGEND OF THE WHITE LADY

Of the oldest one only remains a ruin and the legend of the White Lady - "la Dama Bianca". The story goes that a jealous castle lord didn't want other men to see his beautiful wife and therefore kept her locked in the castle tower. The poor woman couldn't stand her reclusion any longer and decided to jump out of the window and threw herself into the sea. She ended however on the rocks and up until today you can still see, coming from the sea, her veiled figure in the form of a white rock.

THE OWNERS OF THE CASTLE

The history of the youngest castle is less dramatic but not less interesting. The last 350 years it has been inhabited by the noble family von Thurn und Taxis. It was heavily damaged during World War One, but has been rebuilt excellently and is completely furnished. Its spectacular location together with the stunning views over the Adriatic sea and its beautiful terraced gardens make a visit worthwhile. You can also visit the World War bunker and the old tower with great view on top of it. The father of the todays owner founded next door the prestigious private international College del Mondo Unito dell'Adriatico

THE RILKE PATH

Early 20th century famous people from the arts and literary world were often invited here. One of the most famous ones was the writer Rainer Rilke who was inspired by the castle in his work. The 'Sentiero Rilke', was named after him. It's a stunning beautiful 2 km. trail on top of the cliffs that runs right along the coastline in between Duino and Sistiana. While walking over it you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea and enjoy the diverse flora and fauna that grows on the rocky limestone landscape.
