It all started in the early fifties. Friuli Venezia Giulia had to repair all of the damage that was caused by the Second World War. Building a modern beach resort was part of that plan. So that's what happened. From out of nowhere Lignano emerged.
None other than the famous American writer Ernest Hemingway came here on a regular basis and called Lignano "the Florida of Italy".
The seaside resort has three different sandy beaches divided into Sabbiadoro (golden sand), Pineta (located in a pine forest) and Riviera. There is even a doggy beach! Together these beaches are 8 km. long.
The beaches are all provided with comfortable seating, sun loungers and parasols that you can rent through the hotels, campgrounds or directly on the beach. Each beach pavilion features a bar, toilets, showers, playground and the option to rent a windsurf or water cycle.
There is plenty to do in and around Lignano. There are discos for the young and many kinds of adventure parks and water parks for all ages. There is even a zoo. There is a wide selection of hotels, campsites and apartments to choose from. You’re very lucky if you find yourself in Lignano on the 15th of August! There is always an air show with the 'Frecce Tricolori' stunt pilots on this national holiday. You can watch the jet fighters at work above the beaches of Lignano.
The area around Lignano is flat and ideal for long bike rides. In the town you will find several bike renting shops to choose from.
Do you enjoy playing golf? Then you're lucky because there is a wonderful 18 hole golf course that also has an excellent restaurant. By car you drive to one of the larger towns such as Venice, Udine and Trieste in no time. For more information click on the link.

SISTIANA IS A SMALL RESORT WITH A PEBBLE BEACH THAT OFFERS AN AMAZING VIEW OVER THE BAY OF TRIESTE AND THE CASTLE OF DUINO
The pebble beach of Sistiana, situated in the municipality of Duino-Aurisina, is a quiet little coastal town which offers great views over the Adriatic Sea. To access the beach you follow a winding road from the upper part of the village down to the bay
Many residents come here on weekends in the summer, so the beach can fill up quite quickly. If you have the chance, come here on a weekday.
Sistiana is located in the Venezia Giulia area of the region where the coastline is formed by high rocks and cliffs formed by karst rocks called 'Carso'. Here and there you can find small seaside towns. The luxury resort of Porto Piccolo is a great example. It is right next to Sistiana.
Sistiana is situated in a bay and has a small port and several restaurants where fresh fish is never missing from the menu.
Thanks to the pebble beach, the sea water is very clear and transparent and has a beautiful turquoise color. It’s ideal for snorkeling! Overlooking the sea on the right you have an amazing view of the Castle of Duino and on the left you see the Bay of Trieste. In between Sistiana and Trieste lies the wonderful Miramare Castle. From the Castle of Duino you can take a nice high altitude hike, following the hiking trail called "Sentiero Rilke". This trail cuts its way right through nature for 2 km. From Duino you can walk on the cliffs overlooking the Adriatic Sea to the next village of Sistiana. Definitely worth doing!
